Special thanks to Keith for lending us his brand new firearm! After waiting almost two years, this fine gentleman didn't even have a chance to shoot it himself before donating it to The CGV for review!

Well folks...if you've been itching for the last two decades to own an AK47 and the Czech made series of CZ rifles wasn't quite cutting it.....then wait no longer.
The Chinese Type 81 has arrived on Canadian shores and I will just come right out and say it.
There isn't anything out there that will even come close to providing the Canadian shooter with the AK47 experience.
The CZ58 series does a fine job of performing...and even looks the part with that curved magazine; but the striker fired Czech wonder will never quite match the feel and sound of this gun if an AK47 experience is what your after.
From the slim wooden forend to the wooden pistol grip....the minute your hands touch this 7.62 firing gun your going to be happy.
The stamped metal receiver is a slightly heavier gauge steel than that used on AK47 these days and that bolt makes that awesome "clackety CLACK" sound as you cycle it that is unmistakingly communist block in it's lineage.
The magazines look very much like AK47 but are NOT interchangeable. The short stroke piston design smoothes out some of the rattle connected to the original Russian long stroke one under firing.
The gas shut off is a nice touch....especially if you can get your hands on some inert grenades and some full powered blanks for this baby!!!! because that grenade launching adapter that doubles as a barrel shroud is the coolest one I've seen on a commercially available gun since the Yugoslavian SKS.
The selector switch will be easy to find if your used to AR15 type platform rifles...replacing the GIGANTIC CLUNKY right hand side arm type of the AK47.
All in all I will say this.
For about $1000 you get quite the gun.
The CZ58 series of rifle may arguably be a better made unit and both share the much desired bolt hold open feature that was always absent on the AK47
but when it comes right down to it....and your wanting to own an AK47 here in Canada and can't because of the prohibition.
The Type 81 is DEFINITELY what your looking for.
Hands down. Bar None.
This is the one.
Sincerely
The CGV.
